On September 9, 1997, Nakia Shamone Bynum (21 YOA, black female) was reported missing by her grandmother who last saw her on August 24, 1997. Further investigation revealed that another individual saw Bynum on August 25, 1997 at 603-A Broad Street in Wilson.

Nakia Shamone Bynum left her 18 month old daughter with a sitter, left home around 7 pm on August the 25th, 1997.

On September 9, 1997, a deceased person in a cardboard box was located off of Benton Road in a field in Nash County by a farmer tending land. Later that month, the deceased person found in Nash County was determined to be that of Nakia Shamone Bynum through dental records.
