Murder of teen killed while on the phone remains unsolved after 20 years - Rocky Mount
REWARD UP TO $15,000 OFFERED FOR INFORMATION THAT LEADS TO THE ARREST OF THE SUSPECT(S) RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS CRIME
On December 29th, 1999 around 140am Melvin Eugene Avent, 19 years old at the time, was on the phone with his brother as someone was chasing him. His brother heard him say to the person “you don’t have to do this” before he was shot on the corner of Luper and Mullins St in Rocky Mount.
His brother recently spoke to WNCN CBS 17
“He has a killer still walking around eating, living, enjoying life,” said Andre Avent.
Andre Avent says he was on the phone with his brother when he died.
“I heard somebody running, chasing him and I’m like ‘what’s going on, is this a movie or is this something that’s not real?’ Because I didn’t even know it was my brother on the phone until at the end when I heard him say ‘you don’t have to do that to me’ and they shot my brother,” Andre Avent recalled.
“Where are the resources? What does Rocky Mount PD do? Nothing,” said Andre Avent. “Like I said, just another cold case.”
