July 4th 2018 death of Rocky Mount man could have been from celebratory gunfire or intentional

On July 04, 2018 at approximately 0618 hours, Emergency Medical Services and Rocky Mount Police officers were dispatched to the scene of a possible cardiac arrest. They arrived to find Mr. John Mack Caudle unresponsive on the walking track of the Senior Center. They found wounds to Mr. Caudle's chest and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Caudle was found by two people who walk the track for exercise. An autopsy was ordered to investigate his death.
Mr. Caudle who was 58 years old at the time was found laying on the walking track with his cell phone in his right hand. He had cash and his wallet on him and a Walmart bag near his right hand. There were no signs of a struggle and robbery did not appear to be the motive.
The investigative report mentions that RMPD had many calls of celebratory gunfire in the city overnight as it was the July 4th holiday.
There has been speculation that Mr. Caudle was possibly struck by the celebratory gunfire and there has also been speculation that he was intentionally killed.
There were no shell casings found on the scene and he was shot twice and grazed once by a bullet.
Mr. Caudle had no criminal history since 1993.
